HDB Smart Meters (AMI) Explained: How to Check If a Peak/Off-Peak Plan Would Save You Money

Our fixed-rate and discount-off-tariff tables can rank plans by a single cents-per-kWh number because those plans charge the same rate no matter when you use electricity. Peak/off-peak plans can't be ranked that way — whether one saves you money depends entirely on when you personally use power, which we don't know and can't assume. An AMI smart meter is what lets you find that out for yourself.
What an AMI meter actually gives you
A standard electricity meter only supports a single monthly reading — enough to bill you, but not enough to tell you when during the day or week you're using power. An AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) meter records your consumption in half-hourly intervals and reports it to SP Group digitally, and you can view that breakdown yourself in the SP app rather than waiting for a paper bill. That's the one piece of information flat rate tables can't give you: your own day-vs-night, weekday-vs-weekend usage split.
Do you already have one?
SP Group's nationwide rollout of AMI meters to every household is targeted for completion by the end of 2026, and most homes should have one installed by now as part of that rollout. Requesting one early
If your home hasn't been reached by the rollout yet and you don't want to wait, SP Group lets you request early installation for a one-time fee of $43.60 (with GST) — the same figure you'll sometimes see listed as a condition on retailer peak/off-peak plans that require a smart meter to take half-hourly readings. Which meter type you need (single-phase or three-phase) depends on your home's electrical setup, which SP Group can confirm when you contact them.
Using the data to actually judge a peak/off-peak plan
Several retailers this site tracks offer peak/off-peak plans — priced structures like Keppel Electric's WEEKEND SAVER, PacificLight's 9 to 9 and Stack It Up, Geneco's Get It 7 To 7, and Senoko Energy's LifeSavvy24 — where you pay one rate during a defined peak window and a lower rate outside it. We deliberately don't rank these against fixed and discount-off-tariff plans on this site, because doing so would mean assuming a usage split that may not match your household at all.
Once your SP app shows your half-hourly usage, you can work this out yourself: check what share of your kWh consumption falls inside each plan's stated peak window versus outside it, then apply that split to the plan's peak and off-peak rates to get your own effective rate — the same calculation our tables do automatically for fixed and discount-off-tariff plans, just using your real split instead of an assumed one. If most of your usage already falls in the off-peak window (for example, if you're out at work on weekdays and your biggest loads — air-con, water heater — run at night), a peak/off-peak plan can beat every fixed-rate plan on this site. If your usage is spread evenly across the day, it usually can't.
